Conditions Treated

Every type of abdominal wall hernia

A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weakness in the muscle wall. Left untreated, hernias tend to enlarge and can occasionally become an emergency. Mr Papettas assesses and repairs the full range.

Inguinal hernia

The most common hernia, appearing as a lump in the groin. Repaired by keyhole or open technique, usually as a day case.

Recovery timeline →

Femoral hernia

A lower-groin hernia more common in women, with a higher tendency to strangulate — typically recommended for semi-urgent repair.

Why they're different →

Umbilical & paraumbilical

Hernias at or near the navel, ranging from small to sizeable, repaired with or without mesh depending on size.

Does it need surgery? →

Incisional hernia

Occurring through the site of a previous operation. These can be more complex and benefit from an experienced abdominal wall surgeon.

Robotic repair →
Surgical Technique

The right repair for you

The best technique depends on the hernia, your anatomy and your lifestyle. Mr Papettas is a minimally invasive specialist and will discuss the options fully at consultation.

Keyhole

Laparoscopic repair

Small incisions, mesh reinforcement from inside the abdominal wall — often less post-operative pain and a quicker return to activity. Particularly suited to recurrent and bilateral hernias.

Open

Open repair

A well-established, reliable approach performed under local, regional or general anaesthetic, remaining an excellent choice in many situations.

Robotic

Robotic-assisted repair

Enhanced precision and visualisation for selected complex and incisional hernias, drawing on advanced minimally invasive training.

Common Questions

Hernia surgery, answered

How quickly can I be seen privately?
Private consultations at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital in Leamington Spa are usually available within a few days. Self-referrals are welcome and a GP letter is not required.
Is hernia repair a day-case procedure?
Most inguinal, femoral and umbilical repairs are performed as day-case surgery, so you go home the same day. Larger or more complex repairs may need a short overnight stay.
Keyhole or open — which is better?
Both are excellent in the right circumstances. Keyhole repair is often associated with less pain and a faster recovery and is well suited to recurrent or bilateral hernias; open repair remains highly effective in many cases. The choice is made with you at consultation.
How long is recovery?
Many patients return to light activities within a few days and to most normal activities within two to three weeks, depending on the hernia, the technique used and your occupation.
