Recovery After Keyhole Hernia Surgery: A Week-by-Week Timeline

By Mr Trif Papettas FRCS · Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon · 2 min read

Knowing what to expect after keyhole (laparoscopic) hernia repair helps you plan time off and recover with confidence. Everyone differs, but here's a typical timeline.

The first few days

Most keyhole repairs are day cases, so you'll usually go home the same day. Expect some soreness and bruising around the small incisions, and possibly mild shoulder-tip discomfort from the gas used during surgery, which settles quickly. Simple pain relief is usually enough. Gentle walking from day one aids recovery.

Week one

Discomfort eases steadily. You can do light activities and short walks. Avoid lifting anything heavy and don't drive until you can perform an emergency stop without pain.

Weeks two to three

Many people return to desk-based work and light routines. Energy improves. Continue to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise.

Weeks four to six

Most patients gradually return to normal activity, including exercise, as comfort allows. Heavier or more physical jobs may need a little longer.

Listen to your body

Mild twinges as you heal are normal. Contact your surgical team if you develop increasing pain, redness, swelling or a fever.
