Mr Trif Papettas FRCS

What are signs you need hernia surgery?

Persistent or worsening pain, a bulge that's growing or no longer easily pushed back in, discomfort that interferes with work or exercise, and any hernia that becomes hard, tender, or discoloured are all signs to be assessed — the last group needs urgent same-day attention.

Signs worth booking an assessment for

A hernia that's noticeably grown since you first spotted it, one that aches or pulls during everyday activity like standing, lifting, or coughing, or one that's started interfering with work, exercise, or sleep are all reasonable prompts to get assessed and discuss whether repair is advisable now rather than later.

Signs that mean seek urgent care the same day

A hernia that suddenly becomes very painful, hard, tender to touch, or changes colour (red, purple, or dark); one that previously reduced (pushed back in) but no longer does; or symptoms of nausea, vomiting, or a swollen, distended abdomen alongside it, can indicate incarceration or strangulation — a surgical emergency. Don't wait for a routine appointment if you notice these.

Signs that are more borderline

A small, painless bulge that reduces easily and hasn't changed in a while is lower risk, but 'lower risk' isn't the same as 'no risk' — it's still worth a clinical opinion, particularly to confirm what type of hernia it is, since some types (femoral, for instance) are treated more urgently regardless of symptoms.

When in doubt, get examined

Self-assessment has real limits — see the 3-finger test for a simple screening check, but treat any positive finding, or ongoing uncertainty, as a reason to book a proper consultation rather than a final answer either way.
