Can you get a hernia repair on the NHS?

Yes. If a GP examination confirms a hernia that's causing symptoms or carries a meaningful risk of complications, you're eligible for free NHS repair via referral to a general or colorectal surgeon. Small, asymptomatic hernias may instead be offered 'watchful waiting' rather than immediate surgery.

How NHS eligibility works

There's no blanket rule that every hernia gets operated on immediately. NHS surgeons generally prioritise hernias that are symptomatic (painful, enlarging, or affecting daily activity) or that carry a real risk of becoming trapped (incarcerated) or losing their blood supply (strangulated) — femoral hernias, for example, are usually repaired promptly because of this risk regardless of symptoms.

What happens with small, symptom-free hernias

For a small, easily reducible hernia causing no real bother, many NHS surgeons will discuss 'watchful waiting' — monitoring rather than immediate surgery — since the evidence suggests this is a reasonably safe strategy for select patients. It isn't a guarantee surgery will never be needed; if things change, you can be reassessed.

The referral pathway

Your GP examines you, and if surgery is appropriate, refers you to a general or colorectal surgical team, usually via the NHS e-Referral Service, where you can select from suitable providers. From there you'll typically have an outpatient consultation, sometimes a scan, and then a date for surgery.

NHS or private?
